Description:

Cultural competency and ethical decision-making are two different concepts, yet they are interconnected in our approach as culturally responsive clinicians. The understanding and application of unconscious bias awareness has the potential to provide behavioral healthcare providers with rich and powerful insights on how to effectively address ethical dilemmas and engage individuals and families of diverse communities. The trainer’s methodology of infusing humor, personal storytelling in the context of clinical case studies, and current events invites participants to engage fully in a safe and comfortable environment. This unique approach results in understanding the full power of inclusion while maintaining one’s own identity, values, and beliefs, thus broadening one’s understanding of diverse perspectives relative to race, culture, and life experiences.

Bio:

Bonita H. Porter, MSW, LCSW is the Provider Network Operations Director with an LME/MCO. She has thirty years of Administrative and Behavioral Health experience in the public and private sector. She has taught social work as an adjunct professor for nearly twenty years.   Bonita’s areas of training specialty are Cultural Sensitivity in treatment intervention, Clinical Supervision and enhancing Cultural Competency in the Workplace. She has facilitated workshops with Behavioral Healthcare agencies in preparation for national accreditation, Law Enforcement Officers, School Nurses, Substance Abuse Counselors, Social Workers and Hospice Staff.
